Although online fashion retailing has become a somewhat saturated market, the promise of ‘exclusivity’ remains a key differentiator for enticing consumers. And, when it comes to maintaining an air of rareness and luxury, MR PORTER is no slouch. This season, the buying team for the global online men’s retailer has collaborated with an exceptional roster of designers to develop capsule collections that will only be available via MR PORTER.

While the website has partnered with a variety of famed names to create unique pieces in the past (among them: Oliver Spencer, YMC, and Richard Nicoll) there is a distinct international feel this season. Brands such as Paris-based Ami, New York’s Alexander Wang and Belgian native Raf Simons will all debut their limited-edition collections this month.

Beams Plus (a cult Japanese brand coveted for its twist on American classics) will kick off the rollout on May 14, 2013. Inspiration for the collection is credited to the Surf Ivy series by Japanese surf artist Koi Toyoda, with influences seen such as a surfer image replacing a paisley pattern on a pair of cotton twill shorts. Additional ‘ivy’ elements include preppy polos in sunshine yellows and cobalt blues. Another Japanese label launching a collaborative is Foot the Coacher (founded by Toshinosuke Takegahara, who has previously worked with the exceptional Northampton shoemakers Tricker’s and George Cox), in conjunction with Grenson, as they release a series of lace-up boots with subtle brogue detailing.

Next to premiere will be a collection by Paris-based Ami, whose lead designer Alexandre Mattiussi said he created the looks for the young café crowd of Canal Saint-Martin. Notable pieces include a softly structured double-breasted blazer and a pair of electric-blue suede brogues.

Finally, Alexander Wang and Raf Simons will unveil their looks, which will be pieces from their spring collections reworked with a unique spin, or entirely new designs that have been created in the spirit of the season. Images of a Simons print have been revealed showcasing an original watercolor floral print rendered in an acid palette and applied to bomber jackets, hi-top trainers and t-shirts.

MR PORTER, you certainly know how to get our attention!
